How to Fix BSOD Error Code 0xc0000098 in Windows 10

Fix 1: Manually Rebuild Boot Configuration Data (BCD): 

As a first try to resolve the Boot Error Code 0xc0000098, you can manually rebuild Boot Configuration Data (BCD). For that, you need Windows installation media. To get the Windows installation media, follow these steps and then follow the same process.

  • Firstly, go to Microsoft Windows 10 download page and under the Create Windows 10 installation media, click on the Download tool now button; after downloading the installation media, save it on your system.
  • Then double-click on the Media Creation Tool and select the option Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) for another PC and click on Next.
  •  Now select the language, edition and architecture of your Windows.
  • Further, select the prefered media. If you would like to use a USB flash drive, then ensure you have an 8GB drive in hand. To complete the Setup process, you can follow the on-screen instructions.

Then you need to change settings in BIOS.

  • Switch on your System.
  • Then press any of these keys to enter into the BIOS, EscDelete to F2F8F12, soon your system starts booting. (function keys will depend on the system model and manufacturer)
  • When you enter the BIOS window, select BOOT from the top menu and select Removable Devices or CD-ROM as the first boot device.
  • Click on the F10 key to save the changes, exit from the menu, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Once you reached into Windows setup menu, select Next and click on Repair your computer tab (as you can see the option at the bottom in the window).
  • Then navigate to Troubleshoot-> Advanced Options->Command Prompt.
  • In the Command Prompt window, type or copy+paste the following command and press Enter after each command;

bootrec /scans

bootrec /fixmbr

bootrec /fixboot

bootrec /rebuildbcd

  • In case the permission prompt appeared, select Y and press OK.
  • Once done, exit from the Command Prompt and restart your system. Now you can check whether the said error persists or not.

Fix 2: Run Startup Repair Manually:

Some suffered users finally managed to get rid of the Boot Error Code 0xc0000098 by running the Windows built-in Startup Repair tool. You can also try the same. So, follow the below steps to run Startup Repair on your system,

  • Firstly, boot your PC using the setup drive (UBS or CD or DVD).
  • Then, select the Repair your computer button from the bottom left corner of the screen in the Windows setup window.
  • Now move to Troubleshoot->Advanced options and then select Start-up Repair option.
  • Here the Start-up repair option will start scanning, and if the scan finds any issue, it will repair the issue automatically.

Fix 3: Run CHKDSK: 

The Check disk option is designed to check disks and verify the system files are flawless. If you encountered the BIOS Error Code 0xc0000098 on your system, you could run CHKDSK to check any system files get corrupted. For doing so, you can follow the below steps,

  • Firstly, boot in your system using the downloaded installation media and then launch the Command Prompt window.
  • Inside the Command Prompt window, type or copy+paste the following line and then press Enter.

chkdsk C: /f /r /x

  • Here the value of C is the drive where the Windows is installed. The letter R to find out the errors in the system. Then the letter X stands for the volume requiring for scanning.
  • Once the scanning process gets completed, exit from the Command Prompt window and restarts your system. And check for the said error.

Fix 4: Run the SFC Scan (System File Checker scan):

Sometimes if your system files get corrupted or damaged, then you might get Boot Error Code 0xc0000098. Here the best solution is to run an SFC scan; for doing so, follow these easy steps,

  • Firstly, boot in your system using the downloaded installation media and then launch the Command Prompt window.
  • Inside the Command Prompt window, type or copy+paste the following line and then press Enter.

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows

  • Now let the scan complete on its own. Once finished, restart your system and check for the said error.

Fix 5: Restore your System:

The system restore process will help you to resolve many common errors and some types of system crashes. The process also reverts the system to the previous state where the Boot Error Code 0xc0000098 does not exist. Fix 6: Clean Installation of Windows:

  • Then click on Install now tab and tick the checkbox nearby I Accept and then select Next.
  • Now select Custom: Install Windows only(advanced) option.
  • If more than one disk appeared, you need to highlight all partitions/drives and then select Delete. When any prompt appeared, click on OK.
  • But do not delete the drive Unallocated Space. You should keep Drive 0 Unallocated Space. Then click on Next.
  • Finally, follow the instructions appear on the screen to complete the process. Once done, remove the external storage drive from the system and restart the system. Now the said error might get resolved for you.

Note: Along with the new installation, you need to update your Windows to update your network driver and graphics card installed on the computer.
