How to Fix Google Chrome Update Error (Error code-7:0x80040801)

  • Firstly, press Windows + R to open the RUN dialog box.

  • When you reach the Properties windows, in the General tab, change the Startup type to Automatic and Service status as Start. Repeat the same step for the Google Update Service (gupdatem) as well.
  • Lately, after this change, restart your system and try to update your Chrome again.

Fix 2: Whitelist Google Update Service from Firewall:

If the above fix failed to update Google Chrome, then you can check the Firewall settings, is it preventing Google Chrome from updating process. To update Google update service, follow these steps;

  • Firstly, press Window + R to open the RUN dialog box. Then in the dialog box type ‘control firewall.cpl’ and click OK. The Windows Defender Firewall screen will open for you.
  • Then inside the Firewall window, from the left pane, select the option Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall. 
  • Now in the newly opened window, click on Change settings. If the UAC (User Account Control) prompt appearedclick on Yes to grant admin access.
  • Further, scroll down through the list and find googleupdate.exe, then beside this service, tick the checkbox for both Private and Public. Now click on OK to save the changes.
  • Now you have whitelisted googleupdate.exe service successfully. Finally, check the Chrome update issue resolved or not.

Note: Several third-party firewall suites prevent Google Chrome from facilitating the updating service. If you are using any third-party security suite, you can search for steps on online to whitelisting an executable.

Fix 3: Reinstall the latest version of Google Chrome browser:

The last fix for Google Chrome Update Error 0x80040801 is reinstalling the latest version of Google Chrome. To reinstall the latest version, follow these steps,

  • Firstly, ensure the Google Chrome is closed completely.
  • Then press Windows + R to launch the RUN dialog box. Then type “appwiz.cpl” and click on OK. The Programs and Features window will open now.
  • Inside the Programs and Features window, locate and right-click on Google Chrome, then click on Uninstall. Follow the on-screen instructions to erase the Chrome browser from the system. Along with that make sure you have deleted all the files related to Chrome.
  • After the uninstallation, restart the system. When the system starts again, launch the RUN dialog box and then type “%localappdata%” and click on OK. Now the Local folder will appear on the screen.
  • Now open the Google folder, then right-click on Chrome. Hereafter delete all directory along with all their children folders. If the local data cache folder of Chrome is deleted, then reinstall Google Chrome.
  • Go to the official website of Google Chrome and download the latest version available and follow the on-screen instructions to install it.
  • After the latest version installed, the said error will be resolved now.
