Fix 1: Run Windows Update Troubleshooter:

As a first attempt to resolve the Windows Update Error 0x8024b102 issue, you can run the in-built Windows Update Troubleshooter. To run the troubleshooter, you can follow these steps,

In Windows 11:

  • Firstly, press Windows + I altogether to launch the Settings app.
  • Then inside the Settings, click on System and select Troubleshooter.
  • Now click on Other troubleshooter, and in the next screen, click on the Run tab beside the option Windows update.
  • When the update prompts appears before you click on Next and complete the process.

In Windows 10:

  • Firstly, launch the Settings app and click on the Update & Security category. 
  • Then select Troubleshoot from the left pane menu and click on the Additional troubleshooters link.
  • Now select the Windows Update option and click on the Run the troubleshooter tab.
  • Once done, restart the system and check the said issue is resolved or not.

Fix 2: Edit Registry:

If the Windows Update download path is corrupted or damaged, it will adversely affect further updates. Here it would help if you cleared the registry path. To do edit, you can follow the steps below given steps, 

  • Firstly, press Windows + R to launch the RUN dialog box and type regedit and click on OK. 
  • If the UAC prompt appears on the screen, click on Yes to continue.
  • Next, move to the following path,

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows \ WindowsUpdate

  • There, right-click over the DWORD entry named as WUServer, then choose the Delete option.
  • Then follow the same above step to remove an additional entry named as WIStatusServer.
  • Once done, restart your system and check for improvement.

Fix 3: Run SFC and DISM scan.

If any of the system files are corrupted, you might also encounter Windows Update Error 0x8024b102 issue. Here the best solution is to repair those corrupted system files. To repair system files, you can follow these steps:

  • Firstly, press Windows + R simultaneously to launch the RUN dialog box, then type cmd and press OK.
  • Now open the Command Prompt window with administrative access.sfc/ scannow
  • Then type or copy then paste the following command in the Command Prompt and then press Enter,
sfc /scannow
  • Once the command is executed, the scanning begins, it will detect and repair corrupted system files.
  • If the system files are repaired, then you can type the following command also and then press Enter,
DISM.exe /Online /cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  • Once done, restart the system and check the said issue is resolved or not.

Fix 4: Reset Windows Update Components:

Some suffered users finally managed to get rid of the Windows Update Error 0x8024b102 issue by clearing the contents in the Windows Cache folder. If you haven’t cleared the SoftwareDistribution & catroot2 folder for a long time, then it’s time to clear it. 

Note: Before your clear SoftwareDistribution & catroot2 folder, you need to disable all update related services.

  • Firstly, launch the Command Prompt window with administrative access. 
  • Then in the Command Prompt window, type or copy then paste the following commands one by one and then press Enter,

net stop wuauserv

 net stop cryptSvc

 net stop bits

 net stop msiserver

 Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

 Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

 net start wuauserv

 net start cryptSvc

 net start bits

 net start msiserver

  • Once done, restart the system and check for improvement.

Fix 5: Install Cumulative Updates Manually:

If any of the above solutions do not help you, then you need to download and install the cumulative updates manually. You can use any third-party updating tool to update your Windows automatically, or you can update manually. 

To update manually;

  • Firstly, you need to visit the Windows 10 Update History page.
  • Then click over the top link under the In this release section and copy the patch number starting with the KB.
  • Now go to Microsoft Update Catalog and copy the KB number in the search box, and press Enter.
  • Now from the list, select the update based on your system version (32-bit, 64-bit).
  • Then click on the Download button; once downloaded, double-click on the setup file and follow the on-screen instructions to install it on your system.
