net stop bits

net stop msiserver

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

net start wuauserv

net start cryptSvc

net start bits

net start msiserver

· Once the commands inputted successfully, exit from the Command Prompt and Restart the system. The updating issue will get solved by now. 

Fix 3: Force the Installation of the Update through Powershell

If any of the above fixes did not help you, then you can avoid the Windows Update error 0x800f0982 issue by forcing the update via Powershell. To force the installation of the update, follow these steps, 

  • Firstly, open the RUN dialog box by pressing Windows + R altogether. Then type PowerShell and click on OK. If the UAC (User Account Control) prompt appears click on Yes.
  • Inside the command prompt window type, ‘wuauclt.exe /UPDATENOW‘ and then press Enter. 
  • If the update installed, Restart your system. now check for the error.
